Aside from terriers, bulldogs also make up a large part of his ancestry. The art of dog fighting dates back to ancient times in both England and North America. During the animal fights, the Bulldog was sent into the arenas with bulls. Although these Bulldogs are the forerunners of today’s English Bulldog, they were much closer in their physique to today’s pit bull. 

After animal fights were officially banned, they were continued illegally; in the USA to this day. In illegality, the old bulldogs were crossed with terriers, which was officially forbidden, as the resulting hybrids became too dangerous. In this way, the “Bull and Terrier” emerged in the industrial areas of England in the 19th century and came to the USA very quickly. There they were called the “Pit Bull Breed” or “Pit Bulls”. Pit is the ring of dog fighting. In 1898, the still existing “United Kennel Club” (UKC) was founded, which attracted the breeding of these dogs.  Some organisations are still nothing more than professional organizers of dog fights. 

So the community split around these dogs. The actual lovers of the pit bull breed condemned dog fights, and wanted a friendly family dog. In the meantime, pit bulls had earned a high reputation in US society. In World War I, the courage of the pit bulls became an incentive for the fighting power of the American troops. Even celebrities like US President Theodore Roosevelt showed up with a Pitbull. In the cinemas, “Die kleinen Strolche”, a children’s gang with a dog, were extremely popular. The films ran between 1922 and 1944 in 220 episodes. The pit bull breed was the guardian and protector, playmate and soul comforter of the children. The ideal image of a child- and family-friendly dog – a pit bull! 

In order to distinguish themselves from the dubious dog scene, the lovers of the family-friendly pit bull now called their dogs “Staffordshire Terriers” and later”American StaffordshireTerriers”. These were officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1936 and later by the FCI. This serious pit bull is still looked after today by the “American Staffordshire Terrier Club of America”, which had clearly condemned dog fights from the beginning and relied on his breeding as a family dog. 

In Germany, the American Staffordshire Terrier is looked after by three reputable clubs in the VDH. The reputation coupled to dogs earmarked today as “Pitbull’s” has not changed and in some circles is still treating them as dubious dogs. Still today the name “Pitbull” is associated with a generic term for the “American Staffordshire Terrier” similar looking and – hopefully – they also are identical dogs but unfortunately without official recognition and without serious breeding records. Pitbull Puppies at 3 Weeks Old

By the time a puppy is 3 weeks old, it will continue to grow rapidly. Pitbull puppies are also stronger by this stage, and able to move around more easily. It is at this age that puppies start to look more like little dogs than tiny puppies. At this age, the puppy will spend most of his time sleeping and eating. As these Pitbull puppies grow, they will begin to move and play more.

Pitbull puppies will start to stand and sit correctly by three weeks. Their ears and eyes will also be fully developed, and their tails will start to wag. Pitbull puppies at 6 weeks old

Toward the end of his sixth week, your puppy will be either fully or mostly weaned from his mother. Instead of milk, your puppy now eats five or six very small meals of puppy food. Pit Bull Puppies 8 Weeks

It is generally recommended that American Pit Bull Terrier puppies go to their new homes at 8 weeks old, but if you can, allow your puppy to stay with his littermates until he is 10 weeks old for better socialization.

As a pitbull puppy grows, socialization becomes even more important, and puppy classes are a great way to meet other dogs and their owners. 

In the case that you choose to train your pitbull yourself, you should invite people over to meet him and seek out opportunities where your puppy can play with other dogs outside the home.

2 Month Old Pitbull Puppies

At 2 months old, a Pitbull puppy should weigh around 20 pounds. They grow fast, and continuously gain weight as they grow. It is important to let them play as much as possible to get rid of all that accumulated energy. The good news is, however, that they become less hyperactive as they age. Also, between the ages of 12 and 18 months, your dog will begin to calm down.

When your puppy reaches 12 to 16 weeks of age, he or she will become more independent. They will also become protective and territorial as well as possess a stronger renaissance. 

In general, pit bulls continue to grow until they are about two to three years old. Pit bull puppies can reach their full height between 12 and 18 months, and their full weight between two and three years old. 

Are Pit Bull Dogs Dangerous

As with any dog, pit bulls can become violent, aggressive, and mean if they are neglected, abused, or bred irresponsibly, and if they are not trained, health issues are not addressed, and neglectful care is not given.

As with Goldendoodles, pit bulls are not recognized as a specific breed by the AKC. Despite the fact that they may have their own registry, the AKC or other well-established organizations do not recognize their registration. As a result, there aren’t clear criteria for Pit Bulls, so any study or account of their behavior is contested. Studies conducted on this subject revealed vast differences in how people describe pit bulls. For example, some call Boxers pit bulls; so you should keep that in mind.

It is true that dogs of all breeds are lovable. However, statistically speaking, some breeds are more aggressive than others. For this reason, dog genetics plays a significant role.

When Pit Bulls become more mature, they have a tendency to exhibit protective behavior that was not previously apparent. By then, however, the owners are attached and denial takes over. They do not want to believe their dog is anything but friendly. This leaves the dog vulnerable to situations where they may attack and injure others.

When those same docile dogs turn protective, they can turn on a dime and attack people, children, or other animals, causing serious injury to them and even death. It is normal for dogs to guard their owners and territories, but unlike most dogs, a Pit Bull bite can be extremely harmful. As their jaws are so powerful, they may not let go easily, while they also have a high tolerance for pain, so even hitting may not be enough to release them.

Pit Bull Breed History

The roots of the pit bull go back to the Middle Ages, when dog fights against bears and bulls were carried out. In these the bravest dog should be found, which shied neither inferiority nor death. Some sources claim to be able to date the pit bull’s early ancestors back to around the year 1000.

In a broad sense, these are said to have certain similarities with today’s “pits”, with the direct ancestors coming from Great Britain. From a mixture of bulldogs and different terrier breeds, the fights-oriented mongrels had to compete against smaller opponents than those of their ancestors.

In pied piper competitions you bet which dog could kill the most rats in one round. Also in Ireland there were popular dog fights (dog against dog) until they were banned in the whole of Great Britain in 1835. The fights were carried out in the so-called “pits” (the arenas of dog fights), which over time became anchored in the name of the pit bull.

Like many other dogs, after dog fighting was banned and British emigration began, the pit bull was brought to the United States of America, where the former pit dogs continued to be used for dog fighting. 

The American Kennel Club (AKC) officially recognized the breed in 1936 and renamed it the American Staffordshire Terrier, but many breeders and lovers of the pit bull were disappointed. The physical characteristics were too different to put the different races “in one drawer”.

We owe the fact that we are still talking about the “pit bull” today to the breeders and enthusiasts who defended the name and questioned the authority of the AKC. With regard to the American Staffordshire Terrier, one can say that it has to be distinguished from the Pitbull. Especially at today’s FCI shows you can see that the muscular American Staffordshire Terrier does not have the flexibility and stamina of a pit bull that can confidently run 50 km in one go.

Today’s pit bulls are often a mix of American Pitbull Terrier and other dogs, which is why a breed standard can not be established.

Pitbull Puppy Ear Crop

Pitbull ear cropping is clearly a cosmetic procedure designed to increase a dog’s ferocity. The public already perceives Pitbulls as dangerous dogs, so adding to their intimidating appearance does nothing to improve their public image. So why do owners continue to treat them that way?

Dog ear cropping has been practiced for centuries, originally to protect Pitbulls from being bitten when fighting. As of today, many places have banned ear cropping, including the UK, Australia, New Zealand, almost all European countries, and most Canadian provinces. However, ear cropping is still legal in many parts of the US.

Pitbull ear cropping is an unnecessary and painful medical procedure that benefits neither the dog nor the owner. In fact, ear cropping can actually harm the dog. There is a possibility of complications following anesthesia or infection, similar to those associated with any surgery. Performing the surgery incorrectly may result in scarring the dog for life or requiring further surgery, which could result in even more loss of the outer ear.

Additionally, dogs may be traumatized from having surgery at such a young age. Dogs use their ears to communicate with their owners and with other dogs, as well. Having lost parts of their ears can result in misunderstandings and even fights with other dogs.

Pitbull Puppies Weight Chart

You should keep in mind that Pitbull growth charts can only provide you with a general idea of how much your puppy will weigh, because each dog is different.

Some weigh more than 38 pounds as adults, but some may weigh less. The most important thing is to keep them healthy.

Your vet is the best person to help you diagnose it, as they can analyze your dog personally.

American Pitbull Terriers are normally fully grown at one year of age. At 4 months of age, the dog will be approximately half of its adult height.

And at 6 months, it will be about 2 thirds of her adult weight.

2 to 6 months is the fastest growing Pitbull puppy.

There are no completely accurate ways to tell exactly how big your puppy is as an adult.

But, you can use Pitbull’s online growth charts as a general guide.

Here is an example of a Pitbull growth chart for medium sized dog breeds.

    At birth – 7 to 10 oz

    2 months – 7 pounds

    4 months – 21 pounds

    6 months – 30 pounds

    8 months – 35 pounds

    1 year – 38 pounds

Pit Bull Is Not a Breed

The term “pit bull” historically referenced any dog that had been subjected to the cruel sport of bull-baiting – the act of tethering and seizing tethered animals, such as bulls, inside an enclosed field or pit (hence the name “pit bull”).

It wasn’t limited to today’s pitbull-type breeds as many different breeds and mixes were subjected to this inhumane activity; therefore, it wasn’t only a sport for bully breeds. 

Essentially, “pit bull” was a label used to describe any dog that was used for bull-baiting, rather than describing a specific breed or type of dog (Example, if a Bull Mastiff had been used as bait in a pit, it would have been classified as a “pit bull”). 

It is important to note that baiting is not a natural trait for any breed, but rather an activity that must be taught and honed, just like training a dog to fetch and sit.

Which Pit Bulls Are Dangerous

Despite their reputation, pit bulls are not inherently dangerous by nature. A lack of training, abuse, irresponsible ownership, neglect and breeding, and a lack of attention to their health and temperament can lead to a dog becoming violent, aggressive, and mean.

Why Pit Bulls Attack Owners

The chances of dogs attacking their owners and others are higher if they have been neglected or abused mentally, physically, or emotionally. Additionally, inbreeding has been responsible for increasing the number of highly aggressive animals in family homes.

It would not be right to say people directly, but most of the psychological problems of dogs are related to people. For example, the effects of psychological violence such as raising the dog in an inappropriate and low-stimulation environment, mistreating the dog, using electric / strangle / barbed collars, hitting (physical violence) or shouting at the dog, getting angry, scolding and scaring the dog, aggression behavior disorder and fear-phobic behaviors in dogs. It causes psychological disorders such as anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder and depression. In addition to these, many different problems such as heart and vascular disorders, stress-related gastrointestinal problems, dementia, physical traumas and injury to the thyroid glands occur.

Dangers Of Pit Bulls

• If improperly trained, they could be lethal. They’re very strong, very intelligent, and very needy, creating a dangerous combination.
• The danger is that they can become aggressive if not handled properly, like chaining them and neglecting them or exposing them to aggressive behaviour, which can make them scared and territorial.
• Among the Terrier breeds, pit bulls are the most powerful. They were enhanced for size, speed, and jaw strength so they could compete with larger dogs and even bears. They have a powerful lock jaw bite as well as very strong necks; they can shake their prey until their necks break.
• If these dogs are raised in the wrong hands, they can be extremely dangerous.
• In comparison to other dog breeds, they do a full-on attack rather than nipping or biting. So they do more damage. Their biting technique is to hold and shake like a shark so that they can do the most damage possible.
• The prey drive of these animals makes them potentially dangerous when left uncontrolled, whether at home, when being walked, or if they are let out.

Pitbulls and Babies – A hug relationship!

Experts recommend that puppies socialize with children during the first months of life. The reason is very simple: young children move very fast and sometimes they are clumsy . Exposing dogs to these types of movements that can occur in their daily lives will make them react positively and naturally when they are adults.

It is important that we accustom any animal in the presence of children  to show them that they are not a threat or obstacle between the love of the owners and him. It makes sense, right? Surprisingly, behind that imposing and sculptural cynical figure, hides a reliable and embracing animal if trained correctly.

However, just because a dog’s relationship with a toddler can be beneficial and loving does not mean that precautions should not be taken. We adults must ensure that the dog does not adopt a jealous attitude when a baby arrives At home, we must also keep in mind that little ones can become very tired and hurt pets while playing, which, in self-defense, could lead to a violent reaction on the part of the animal.

Remember that in order for coexistence between an animal and a small child to be positive, it is important to educate both the baby and the dog to respect each other. Over time, the two will develop a love and affection for one another.
